Song Haidong emerged in 1980s as part of the avant-garde movement. His work challenges traditional forms of art-making in search of a more conceptual direction. Many of his pieces made use of physical objects and synthetic materials. Song Haidong's sculptures may be regarded as hallmarks of Chinese conceptual art.
